Students keen on basketball now have the chance to be part of our Basketball Academy, under the guidance of Coach Mr Philip Brain. The academy consists of an extra basketball specific training session per week with a technical/skill based focus. All students from years 9–11 boys and girls are welcome to attend.

Criteria for selection

  • Positions have been restricted to Yr 9, 10 and 11 students; those selected must maintain a sound academic programme and achievement
  • Excellent attendance
  • Must play for a Waitakere College basketball team.
  • This is an exciting venture for Waitakere College in utilising the strengths of our staff to build up the skills and talents of our students.

Basketball academy runs Wednesdays before school - 7:10am start sharp.

Mr Philip Brain

Philip Brain has been a teacher at Waitakere College since 2005 and is the teacher in charge of Basketball. As a player, Philip is a former Age Group representative in the Waitakere Region, and still enjoys playing today. Philip is also regularly involved in officiating basketball.

Philip has coached basketball for over 20 years. His coaching dossier includes winning the inaugural inter-city competition with the Waitakere Basketball U/16 representative team, but has mostly focussed on secondary school teams in both zone competitions and in qualifying for and participating in Auckland’s premier division.

Philip has an inclusive style and philosophy of coaching, encouraging people of a wide range of abilities to get involved in Basketball and enjoying being involved in sport.

Philip Brain has a Bachelor of Education through Massey University with a major in Physical Education, and a Diploma of Teaching through Auckland College of Education.
