Waitākere College

New Student Pōwhiri and Orientation Day

On Friday 2nd February our pōwhiri marked the official induction of all Year 9 and new Year 10 - 13 students and their families into the Waitākere College community.

The Powhiri was Led by Kaumatua Warahi Paki and Matua Troy Bond. Under the guidance of Kuia Linda Paki and Whaea Pearl Snowden, the karanga resonated through the gathering, a traditional call of welcome and connection.
Principal Mark Shanahan emphasised to the students the unwavering support of every teacher and staff member throughout their five-year journey at the high school, expressing gratitude to the families for entrusting their children to Waitākere College.

Following the Pōwhiri, students eagerly discovered their class assignments and caught up with friends as they enjoyed snacks under the bubble.
The remainder of the day unfolded with classmates and tutor teachers, as well as Year 13 peer mentors, guiding new students through tours and inductions, ensuring a smooth transition before their first official day of classes on Wednesday.

We look forward to our Year 9 BBQ on the 22nd Feb for another opportunity to foster connections and support amongst our students and their whānau.
