Art and Culture at Auckland Museum

On Thursday the 22nd of February Year 11 Art students went to the Auckland Museum for an integral part of their 5 credit Internal Assessment. For Term 1, students are doing visual research on a chosen type of jewellery or clothing, comparing similarities and differences between Māori and other cultural versions.

On the morning of the trip, everyone was given some snacks and hopped onto the bus at 9:00. Once at the museum, students were given museum-friendly 2B pencils and sent on their missions. They were looking for items of adornment in the Museum collection to sketch in their workbooks. There were beautiful old Māori heru (combs), hei tiki and kakahu to draw as well as items from other cultures. After lunch, students finished in the Māori and Pacific sections and explored the rest of the museum searching for anything wearable and decorative. We were then on the bus and back at school by 2:45.

This was a great opportunity for students to do some observational drawing around real works of art. Thank you to Year 11 Art students whose exemplary behaviour and uniform made us proud to be Waitākere College.
