Smokefree Tangata Beats: 4orty2wos Band

Kia Ora, Tālofa, Malo ē lelei, Kia Orana and many greetings,

I would like to introduce a newly formed band ‘4orty2wos’ with the following members Tony Ese, Dahil Ese, Kalita Tautaiolevao, Junior Lito, Michael Demeter, Gavin Venu Masina, Benine Vavia, Sana Taefu Tia, Annika Schwalger and Elisha Opetaia. These students specialise in a variety of instruments which range from the modern electric guitar, bass, piano and drums as well as the incorporation of Polynesian instruments, the ukelele and the pate. The band have had the pleasure of being mentored by Jesse Sheehan, director of Lila School of Bands and professional musician in Aotearoa.

The 4orty2wos are practising weekly in preparation for the upcoming Smokefree Tangata Beats competition. This will be Waitākere College’s first time entering this competition. Smokefree Tangata Beats is a live, original music, nationwide, youth event that recognises and reflects the unique cultural identity of Aotearoa New Zealand and the South Pacific. The Smokefree Tangata Beats competition aims to be a platform for developing and growing young music talent in Aotearoa. It has been a nurturing ground for young artists who are successful today, such as Nesian Mystik – Nesian Mystik are the only New Zealand band to ever have ten singles all certified gold or platinum.

By entering this competition, the band is motivated to prove their ability with cultural relevance, realise the heights they can reach in their music careers and encourage their peers to support 100% original Aotearoa Kiwi music.

Save the date: The competition takes place on the 25th of May 2024 at Auckland Girls Grammar School - the time is still to be announced. Please show your support for the 4orty2wos by sharing words of encouragement with our band members as they continue their journey to Smokefree Tangata Beats.
