Train Services Changes 31 May - 6 June

All AT trains will be replaced by buses from late from Friday 31 May, until Monday 3 June.

From Tuesday 4 June until Thursday 6 June:

  • Buses will replace Western and Southern line trains between Waitematā and Newmarket.
  • At peak commuting times
  • Southern Line trains will run between Papakura and Newmarket every 20 minutes.
  • Additional Southern Line trains will run between Papakura and Waitematā via the Eastern Line every 20 minutes – these trains will stop at all stations between Papakura and Ōtāhuhu, and all stations between Sylvia Park and Waitematā.

See below for a full list of the train service impacts.

KiwiRail will replace a set of “turnouts” near Newmarket Station, and return another set of turnouts near Kingsland Station to operation. Turnouts allow trains to move from one track to another in multiple directions. This work will help ensure AT’s Western and Southern Line services run as planned between Newmarket and Waitematā, and AT will be able to run more Western Line trains after major events at Eden Park.

KiwiRail needs six days to complete the Newmarket work. It includes removal of the existing turnouts and sleepers, digging down and replacing the track foundations, replacing ballast (the rocks that the tracks and sleepers sit in) and craning in new sleepers and the track turnout structure. Adjustments will also be made to signalling and overhead power assets to match the new track turnout layout.

Additionally, there will be widespread work on every train line over King’s Birthday weekend (Saturday 1 June – Monday 3 June).
