On Wednesday, we welcomed 106 students from Waitākere Primary and Swanson Primary for our annual Taster Day, where they get to experience a day at high school.
The schedule was packed with four dynamic sessions, each lasting 55 minutes, covering topics such as Art, Science, Technology, and Languages. The first two sessions engaged students in creative and scientific exploration. In the Art session, students participated in a "Caricature Whanaungatanga" activity, where they learned basic caricature techniques and created caricatures of their buddies that showcased their interests.
Meanwhile, in Science, the thrill of flame tests and dynamic demos captivated the students. Guided by their teachers, they experimented with Bunsen burners, making scientific discoveries hands-on.
The afternoon sessions excitedly continued. In Technology, students crafted small wooden and rope toys, applying various workshop skills such as drawing, drilling, cutting, and sanding. This hands-on activity is built on the robotics projects from previous years.
Meanwhile, language enthusiasts participated in fun and interactive games. The French group engaged in a word game with buzzers across five categories. Inspiring cultural learning, the Chinese group practised creating Chinese characters with playdough, and the Sāmoan group created beautiful lollie leis.
A special thanks to all the teachers and student helpers involved in this programme, the teachers who provided relief for the day and the wonderful staff from Swanson and Waitākere Primary for joining us.
We look forward to welcoming back these students next year, as Year 9 Waitākere College students!
