Waitākere College is proudly celebrating Sāmoan Language Week this week, continuing its tradition of vibrant engagement with Sāmoan culture. The national theme for this year is “Ia malu lou sā. Folau i lagimā,” which translates to “A well-grounded self is a successful self.”
To honor this celebration, Waitākere College has organised a variety of cultural activities that highlight the richness of the Sāmoan language and traditions. The week kicked off with a flag-raising ceremony on Tuesday morning, followed by an energetic dance performance by Year 9 students and a fun green banana peeling competition.
On Wednesday, Year 10 students performed a dance, participated in a taro scraping competition, and took part in an exciting dance battle. Thursday featured the Year 11 Market Day, individual Sāmoan dances, volleyball games, and karaoke.
Today marks the culmination of the celebrations with cultural dance performances by students in Years 11 to 13. The event will close with a traditional Taualuga performed by the Year 12-13 students. Additionally, Sāmoan students are encouraged to wear traditional Sāmoan attire. A special display has also been set up in the library to honour Sāmoan culture. Sāmoan language classes have promoted speaking in Sāmoan, allowing students to engage more deeply with the language, so don’t forget to say "Talofa lava!" Fa’afetai tele lava to all the students and staff who have contributed to making this celebration a success.
La malu lou sā, folau i lagimā.
