60 Years on the Field and Still Going Strong

An inspirational sports player, Mr Uka has taken home another hockey medal at the National Hockey Masters Championships!


Narandra Uka has played team sports for more than 60 years, last week he was in the North Harbour Provincial 65+ team that won a bronze medal at the National Hockey Masters Championships in Wellington. During his time at Waitākere College, his team has won a silver medal in 2012 and a gold medal in 2013 at the National Hockey Masters Championships.

During his teaching career which started in 1982, Mr Uka has coached football, rugby, cricket, hockey, kilikiti and chess teams. His first visit to Waitākere College was in 1984 when he brought a girl's football team to play in the National Secondary School tournament that was hosted by Waitākere College. Mr Uka started playing rugby at primary school and was a trialist for the Counties Roller Mills team. He started playing Hockey at Intermediate school, later playing in a Counties representative under 15 Hockey team. While at university he took up soccer playing for Taumarunui AFC in the 'Swiss Maid' league in the early 1980s. He returned to playing hockey in the Bay of Islands Hockey Association Competition where played in some representative teams in a Northland competition. He also played basketball when living in Kerikeri. A personal highlight is completing the Auckland Marathon in 1984 about 16 months after seriously fracturing both bones in his lower left leg while playing against an army team in Waiouru.
