Waitākere College

Sports Exchange with Kaipara College 2024

On the last day of Term 1, the school had our annual sports exchange with Kaipara College. This was the third exchange between the two schools after unfortunate interruptions with covid and the flooding, so it was awesome to finally get another successful exchange underway.

The exchange gave the opportunity for 7 of our teams to get a competitive hitout before the winter season begins this Term. With over 200 students from both schools participating it is a massive day for the sports department so a big thanks goes to Mr Mcgrath in particular and the coaches from both schools for making it happen.

Waitākere had narrowly won the last two exchanges so the pressure was on this year's group to try and keep the shield. Kaipara was welcomed with a fantastic powhiri led by our outstanding Kapa haka group. A thank you to Whaea Pearl and Matua Troy for making this happen.

Students from both schools were also presented with a food pack and a sausage sizzle on the day so a thank you to Miss Itamua and the services classes for the help with the all-important kai!

On to the action, it was a very positive day for the Waitakere teams to win all the fixtures to retain the shield!

The results on the day were:

1st XV Boys Rugby WON 25 - 15
Premier Netball WON 76 - 37
Open Boys Basketball WON  64-21
1st XI Boys Football WON 19-0
Girls' Football WON 17-0
9A Netball WON 47 - 10  Junior Boys Basketball WON 65-36

The day was topped off with a player of the match for each team from all games and then the shield presentation to Cody Cama, one of our head prefects and the captain of the 1st XV Boys rugby team.

Good luck to all these teams and all of our winter teams for the upcoming winter sports season. Once again a big thank you to all coaches, managers, transporters and helpers for our teams as without you sport could not happen in the school.
