Embracing Nature and Growth at Outward Bound

By Dehlia Purdeu and Malcolm Moore

Having the opportunity to go on the Manawa Ora Outward Bound course has been one of the most incredible and special experiences of my life. Throughout the 8 days, I learnt to push past my mental limitations, strive for the best, and most importantly to appreciate the little things in life.  I picked up multiple new skills, such as rowing, sailing, and off trail tramping. Alongside this, I was also able to meet 10 incredible people who pushed me and supported me across the entire journey. Outward Bound is truly an unreal experience that can not be put into words, and to anyone who is given the opportunity, I give it my highest recommendation.

GO HILLARY 727!!!

By Dehlia Purdeu

My time at Outward Bound was one of a kind! I was part of the watch Hillary 727, on the Manawa Ora course, a one week course centred on sustainability and hope. I admit that for the first few days, I felt in over my head as an introverted homebody, but getting to be out in nature among supportive people with like-minded visions was so exciting. Our instructors, Noé and Bridget, were there alongside us for lots of it, and we couldn’t have done it without them.

On our journey, we started off with sailing because we were blessed with some strong winds that day. We sailed from Anakiwa to Torea Bay, and the next day we rowed from Torea Bay to Mistletoe Bay. The Marlborough Sounds were just teeming with life, such as dolphins, moon jellyfish, and weka - some bugs and spiders too. And I’ve gotta say, I never had been one to think I’d ever go hiking. Now, though, after the Queen Charlotte track? I’ve always got a little guy at the back of my head wanting to go back out in nature, go and have a good, long walk by myself or with friends.
