Tournament Week & UNISS

The Boys First XI Football team competed in the Malcolm Cowie Tournament, held at Huapai Domain and Fred Taylor Park in Auckland. Played over five days, the tournament featured nine tough matches against schools from across the country. The boys secured four wins, defeating Western Springs College, Whangaparāoa College, Sancta Maria, and Avondale College. Despite strong performances, they narrowly missed a top-three group finish and instead contested placings between 17th and 29th.

Highlights of the week included Azhar Ali scoring a spectacular long-range strike against Sancta Maria, and Mohamed Idris Abay producing a brilliant solo goal against Avondale. Naty Woyimo was voted the team’s Most Valuable Player by opposition coaches, impressing at left back with defensive stability and overlapping attacking runs. In the end, the team placed 20th overall. With a young squad, the experience was invaluable and will help them prepare for future tournaments.

Girls First XI Football

The Girls’ 1st XI football team travelled to Waikaraka Park for the Kathy Seaward tournament. After going unbeaten all season and winning our grade, we knew this week would test us against tougher opposition.

Pool play began with a strong win over Hamilton Christian School, where we put into practice everything we’d worked on. Each game saw us improve and our teamwork strengthen. Four close matches left us 4th in our pool, sending us into the quarterfinals for 9th–20th place.

A thrilling clash with Albany went to penalties, where we held our nerve to win against the top team from the grade above us. We then beat Orewa 3-0 before meeting Pāpāmoa in the 9th/10th playoff. After a tight game and extra time, we narrowly lost 2-1, finishing 10th overall.

Thank you to all our supporters and staff, and best wishes to our departing Year 13s (Taine, Geo, Tarion, and Kimiko). - Miss Murray and Miss Hutson (Coaches)

Boys Senior Basketball

After a strong debut season in the SR A competition, the SR basketball team went to the AA National Qualifier Tournament at Bruce Pulman over the weekend. It was a challenging tournament with 8 games in 4 days. The team competed as one of the youngest in the tournament with only one YR 13 and three YR 10s.

The team competed well in the group stage with several good wins and a few losses against some high quality teams. Unfortunately, injuries played a big factor in the second half of the tournament. With several key players out, we had the opportunity to play young players in bigger roles. While the results did not go our way, coaches were very happy with the way that we competed in most games and the big growth that we saw in those players.

Highlights included a game where Lewis Money hit 7 threes, a 34-point game by Chris Delaibau and a 10-point game from YR 10 Aidan Azel. As a team, we finished 20th of 28 teams. This is several places lower than last year but with a substantially younger team. The future is bright for this team! - Mr Koonstra and Mr Brain (Coaches).

Open Girls Basketball

The team had an outstanding run at this year’s tournament. The opening game against Kristin was a nail-biter. With tournament rules extending games to 10-minute stop-clock quarters, the pace was intense. While shooting wasn’t as sharp as usual, strong offence and defence carried the team to a 56–53 win.

Game two against top-seeded Onehunga ended in a 46–64 loss, but the girls gained valuable experience and confidence, matching their opponents for much of the game while rotating players for rest.

Day two brought back-to-back wins: a 66–52 victory over Botany Downs and a 75–53 win against Diocesan. In both matches, the girls pulled away in the second half as their fitness and teamwork shone through.

Finishing second in their pool meant a semi-final showdown with Howick. Having narrowly beaten them twice in the season, the team knew it would be tough. Both sides came out firing, with the score tied at 22 after the first quarter. From there, our girls took control, with Zoe and Cy combining for an impressive 50 points to seal an 83–65 win and a place in the final.

The championship game against One Tree Hill was a thriller. After three quarters of back-and-forth basketball, our team trailed by just one point. Showing true manawanui, Zoe and Cy kept the offence flowing while Trinity, Adia, and Nanci dug deep on defence and rebounding. Their grit in the closing moments secured a 92–85 victory and the championship title.

Congratulations to the team on a well-deserved win and for showing skill, resilience, and teamwork throughout the tournament! - Mr Grace (Coach).

UNISS  - Premier 1 Netball

The Waitākere College Premier 1 Netball Team brought incredible energy and passion to the 2025 UNISS tournament. With a mix of experienced players and rising stars who pushed themselves in every game throughout the tournament. One of the key moments was when Lavinia Onesemo Mulitalo, a talented Year 9 player, was pulled up to the Premier 1 team. Despite being one of the youngest on the court, she showed amazing skill, and determination, proving she deserved her spot. Another highlight was Belle Ah Van, whose outstanding performance earned her a spot on the tournament team, recognising her as one of the best players across all Upper North Island schools. The whole team played with heart, grit, and unstoppable determination, leaving everything on the court. Our goal was to make the top 10 to prove after a tough placing last year. We were back this year and ready to play. Placing 7th overall in A grade highlighted all the hard work we put in and reflected the support we were provided with. - Premier 1 Team
