The Agsūbay Filipino Ensemble made history at Waitākere College by proudly hosting the school’s first-ever Filipino Language Week, a vibrant celebration of culture, language, and community —October 6-10, 2025. It centered on the theme, “Fostering Filipino and Indigenous Languages: Historic in Unifying the Nation.”
Throughout the week, students and staff enjoyed a range of fun and meaningful activities that highlighted the spirit of Filipino culture. From the joy of Karaoke, to the lively Harana — a traditional Filipino musical performance — and the delicious Market Day, each event was met with enthusiasm and success.
The Karaoke brought everyone together through music and laughter, as students sang a mix of songs from different genres. The Harana showcased talent and tradition, while Market Day offered a true taste of the Philippines with its delicious Filipino delicacies.
As the group reflects on their success, they hope this will be the first of many Filipino Language Weeks to come — continuing their mission to “agsūbay,” or move forward together, in unity and pride. This event holds deep importance not only to the Filipino community but to the entire school, as it gives Filipino students a chance to celebrate their roots, express cultural pride, and share their heritage with others. It also fostered greater appreciation, understanding, and respect among students of all backgrounds, showing that embracing diversity strengthens the spirit of unity at Waitākere College.
A huge thank you to the student leaders and staff working behind the scenes to make this event happen: Lance Breva (Y12), Bryce Gallegos (Y12), Angelica Sabili (Y13), Gab Leygo (Y13), Cailey Caitor (Y13), and Jaedyne Pearl Mayion (Y13) with the guidance of Mr Kent Panis, Ms Jansen Sumalag, and Ms Mishel Cadungog.
Mabuhay!
