Diwali, also known as the festival of lights, is a Hindu festival that celebrates the victory of good over evil, of light over darkness, and of knowledge over ignorance. This year the Waitākere College Indian Cultural group organised different events to celebrate and share the joys of Diwali with our school community.
We started the festivities with a colourful and interactive display in the library that served as an educational resource as well as a visual centrepiece for sharing the story of Diwali.
Students enjoyed the visual display of lights, lamps and colour whilst learning about Diwali through mindful colouring, books, origami and posters.
The rangoli art competition brought out the creative streak in students. They showcased their artistic talents by creating colourful patterns that are traditionally made during Diwali celebrations. The competition ran over the whole week and students submitted their beautiful and colourful designs and won prizes.
Next, we took the celebration to the turf with an energetic game of gully cricket, bringing a taste of India's beloved street cricket to the school grounds. Students experienced the informal, fast-paced version of the sport that's played in neighbourhoods across South Asia, fostering teamwork and friendly competition between teachers and students.
The festivities ended with a Diwali quiz and Bollywood karaoke. The quiz challenged students on their understanding of Diwali traditions, history, and cultural practices, while the karaoke session invited everyone to join in the celebration through music, creating an atmosphere of joy and togetherness.
The Diwali celebration at Waitākere College demonstrated the school’s commitment to cultural diversity and inclusion, providing an opportunity for students to learn about, connect with and celebrate the rich traditions of our multicultural society.
