Two students from Waitākere College, Robin Rajangam and Ruben Maharjan, recently competed in the Auckland Cup Secondary School Pairs Championship, hosted at Mt Eden Bowling Club.
The pair competed in the Development Grade, which is designed to introduce students to the game before competing against other schools. The day began with an introduction to the rules and a practice session, allowing the boys to quickly build their understanding of the sport before moving into competitive matches.
Robin and Ruben applied what they had learned impressively, securing two dominant 4–1 victories against Glendowie College and Kelston Boys’ High School. Considering it was their first experience playing bowls, their performance was outstanding.
The event provided a fantastic atmosphere, with all teams showing strong sportsmanship and support for one another throughout the day. During their byes, the boys also enjoyed participating in friendly activities such as table tennis, darts, pool, and cornhole alongside students from other schools.
Overall, the pair finished with a total of 12 points scored and only 8 conceded. An excellent result for first-time players. It was a great day from start to finish, and we look forward to taking more students and teams along next year.
