Congratulations to the Waitākere College Filipino group, who placed 3rd in the Polyfest Asia Continent Award category!  Competing against numerous secondary schools from across Auckland, performing the dance concepts of Dumendingan and Gaway-Gaway, two traditional Filipino dance forms.

The ensemble’s performance was distinguished by its vibrant traditional costumes, precise choreography, and strong cultural storytelling, reflecting gratitude to the land, as it provides food and security.

Support from the wider school community also played a crucial role. Whānau, friends, staff, and students rallied behind the group, providing encouragement, time, and energy that helped bring the performance to life.

“This result is just the beginning,” the college shared, acknowledging the foundation the group has created for future performers. The name Agsūbay, meaning “to follow” or “to track,” symbolises the group’s mission to honour and carry forward Filipino culture for generations to come.

The ensemble was led by Mr Kent Panis, Teacher in Charge and Choreographer, alongside teachers Ms Nisara Chatsunthornwong, and assisted by Ms Michel Cadungog and Ms Jansen Sumalag.
Student leaders for 2026 included Bryce Gallegos, Irish De La Cruz, Phoebe Dela Cruz, Erich Ilagan, Lance Breva and Via Sangbaan, who guided the group through its landmark debut.

The dumendingan dancers include Sean Baguiwen, Miguel Cruz, Jewel Francisco, Ezekiel Marzuki, Miyaka Menil, Annika Tejada, Eliane Zapanta, David Cruz, Eliana Dela Cruz, Phoebe Dela Cruz, Erich Ilagan, Lance Mallari, Em-em Menil, Chris Plotena, Via Sangbaan, and Kyron Pincil.
