Our Year 10 Zoology students recently traded their desks for the wilder surroundings of Auckland Zoo. It was a day filled with discovery, close encounters, and a deep dive into the evolving world of animal science.
The primary focus of our trip was understanding the evolution of the modern zoo. Students explored how institutions have shifted away from the "menageries" of the past toward becoming world-leading hubs for conservation, research, and animal welfare.
By observing the immersive habitats - particularly the stunning Te Wao Nui native track- students saw firsthand how space and enrichment are used to encourage natural behaviours.
Students had the chance to get "up close and personal" with some of the residents, gaining a new perspective on the scale and complexity of these incredible species. For several students, this was their very first time visiting Auckland Zoo, making the experience even more impactful.
The trip wasn’t just about the sights; it was about gathering data. Our young zoologists are now back in the classroom, ready to apply their observations to their upcoming projects.
