On Tuesday, our school hosted the Central & West Auckland Maths Competition. We had two teams of Year 9s and two teams of Year 10s represent our kura. In this competition, Māori and Pasifika students race each other to solve maths problems, with a runner from each team sprinting to deliver the answers to the judges as quickly as possible.
Our students had previously competed in the first event at St Peters’ College. Heading into the second event, our students worked hard in practising questions at home and together as a team during a lunchtime practice session.
All our teams did amazingly, with one Year 9 team placing first, and our Year 10 teams placing first and third in their heat.
Congratulations to our year 9 team, who placed first: Lukas Maka, Neriah Salman, Eva Bischkopf, and Quinton Va’aelua
First place year 10 team: Declan Fihaki, Shaiann Clark, Abigail Ah Chong, & Kharess Walker-Hemana.
Third place year 10 team: Cohen Edwards-Pulman, Rihare Lloyd, Rihari Mahanga, & Hugo Goffin.
Special mention to Hugo Goffin, who stepped up to the challenge of joining the year 10.
Also, congratulations to our year 9 team who placed first in our first event at St Peter’s College: Lukas Maka, Hugo Goffin, Lucas Blackledge and Olyvar Lister
Thank you to Mr Bridges and Mr Toailoa for coordinating our teams. A special thanks to Ms Foulds, Ms Passi, and Ms Tausā for your support in hosting the event.
Our teams will compete in three more events before the big combined event with schools across South and East Auckland.
