Doors of Opportunity are Always Open, but It's Up to You to Walk Through Them

Written by Bella Bishop-Evans, Year 13

Last week, School of Business students visited Windowmakers in their purpose-built manufacturing facility in Wainui. Heidi Johnston, the Managing Director, showed us around the factory and explained how the business operates. Windowmakers is a New Zealand company that designs and manufactures aluminium windows and doors, customised to meet the needs of each customer. She gave us an insight into the manufacturing process and discussed the importance of teamwork and quality within the company.

During our visit, we toured the production line, learning about the different steps of window production. At the end of the tour, we learnt how to put a window together and had the opportunity to build a window ourselves.

From visiting Windowmakers and listening to Heidi Johnston, we learnt that running a successful business involves much more than just making and selling products. A business must also have strong leadership, effective teamwork, and clear systems to ensure work is completed efficiently and to a high standard. In addition, Heidi taught us that her determination allowed her to take advantage of many opportunities throughout her career. By embracing these opportunities, she gained valuable skills, knowledge, and experience that helped shape the successful leader she is today.

This visit showed us that success does not happen overnight. It comes from working hard, taking opportunities when they arise, and continually learning and growing from new experiences.
