Chinese Language Week Celebrations at Waitākere College

Waitākere College embraced the spirit of Chinese Language Week from June 22nd to 26th with a variety of activities celebrating Chinese language and culture across the school.

Throughout the week, staff and students were encouraged to learn and use a new Chinese phrase each day. These were delivered through daily videos, helping with pronunciation and scenarios, helping everyone build their confidence in using Mandarin in a fun and practical way.

Monday - 早上好 zao shang hao (z-ow shung how) good morning

Tuesday - 明天见 ming tian jian (ming te-an gee-an) see you tomorrow

Wednesday - 请安静 qing an jing (ching un jing) please be quiet

Thursday - 停 ting! stop!

Friday - 我很累 wo hen lei (war hun lay) I am tired

A highlight of the week was Tuesday's Chinese snack sale, where students had the opportunity to try a selection of popular treats from China during lunchtime. The stalls were well supported and provided a delicious way to experience another aspect of Chinese culture.

On Wednesday, our senior Chinese students entertained the school community with a vibrant dragon kite act and a dragon dance performance under the bubble. Their hard work and enthusiasm brought a festive atmosphere to the celebrations and showcased an important cultural tradition.

Thursday's calligraphy session invited staff and students to visit the Chinese classroom and have their names written in Chinese characters. This popular activity offered a hands-on experience with one of China's most respected art forms.

Chinese Language Week provided a valuable opportunity for our school community to engage with a different language and culture. The enthusiasm shown by both students and staff highlighted the importance of celebrating cultural diversity and learning from one another. Through these experiences, students gained a greater appreciation for the traditions, customs, and language of the Chinese-speaking world while strengthening the inclusive, connected culture at Waitākere College.
