Liam Dann, Business Editor at Large at the NZ Herald, came in to talk to Waitākere College's School of Business. Dann started by talking us through his own path: how he ended up working in journalism and eventually becoming a lead editor about economics at the NZ Herald, covering economics and business for a living.
After that, he opened the floor up to questions, and that's where the talk really took off. We covered a lot of ground about the state of the New Zealand economy, how stocks and investing actually work, and KiwiSaver, including how to set one up if you haven't already. His main message was simple: don't let your money just sit there doing nothing. Putting it into KiwiSaver or investing it gives it a chance to grow alongside the economy.
The conversation also drifted into politics, what it's like working as an editor at a major newspaper, and how the Iran-US conflict has been rippling through markets and affecting things here in New Zealand.
It was a memorable and informative talk, packed with practical economic knowledge, the kind of stuff that's useful to know before you're an adult, managing your own money and how global events shape the markets we rely on. For the School of Business, it was a fitting event, a chance to ask good questions and learn practical insight on how the economy is shaped by what is happening in the world.
