From Classroom to Harbour: Students Gain Real-World Engineering Experience with Titan Marine Engineering

During the Term 2 school holidays, Waitākere College Engineering Academy students stepped beyond the classroom and into the world of engineering with Titan Marine Engineering.

Since 1993, Titan Marine Engineering has delivered marine, industrial and precision engineering services across New Zealand and internationally. Students spent two weeks gaining hands-on experience across areas including fitting, machining, welding, fabrication, marine engineering, quality control and workplace health and safety.

Leaving school each day at 6:45 am to arrive at the shipyard by 7:30 am, our students showed outstanding commitment and enthusiasm as they worked alongside experienced industry professionals, learning how engineering projects are designed, managed and completed to a high standard.

A special acknowledgement goes to Waitākere College alumnus Danny Newland, Titan Marine Engineering’s Technical Quality Manager, who supported and guided our students throughout the placement. It was inspiring to see a former student helping create opportunities for the next generation.

This experience gave students the chance to ask questions, learn from industry experts and take a meaningful step towards their future goals. We are grateful to Titan Marine Engineering for supporting our students and helping inspire the engineers of tomorrow.
