Near Miss on Train Tracks - Safety Message From AT

The School Travel Team at Auckland Transport recently reported a rail safety concern near the Sturges Road level crossings. Late last term, there was a serious near miss involving a student from one of the nearby schools at one of the crossings. Reports were also received of students activating emergency gate buttons and attempting to cross while trains were approaching.

As students return to their usual travel routines, we remind all students to take extra care around train tracks and level crossings. Key messages include:

  • Always wait for gates and alarms to stop before crossing.
  • Never try to cross when a train is approaching.
  • Emergency buttons should only be used in a genuine emergency.
  • Stay alert and avoid distractions such as mobile phones when crossing.
