Our Year 11 Social Studies students have been exploring issues of economic justice and social equality. As part of their study, Hinemoa Vince, Martina Novy, and Tenzin Pedersen Zari created a powerful piece of visual art designed to raise awareness about the gender pay gap in New Zealand. Read their reflection below to learn about the symbolism and message behind their work:

Our artwork shows two faces surrounded by different forms of New Zealand currency. The man is beside banknotes while the woman is beside coins to symbolise the unfair difference in pay between men and women. The contrast between banknotes and coins represents the unequal value society can place on the work of men and women.

Our artwork includes a quote from actor Scarlett Johansson: “Equal pay should be a given. It shouldn't be something we have to fight for.” This reinforces our main message that equal pay should be a basic right, rather than something people have to continue fighting to achieve.

Through this artwork, we aim to highlight the gender pay gap and show the importance of fairness and equality in the workforce. We believe everyone deserves equal pay and equal opportunities, regardless of their gender.
