Spotlight on Alumni - Alvin Naiker

Leading Global Financial Crime Compliance Transformation

From his beginnings as a student leader and Prefect at Waitākere College (2003–2007), Alvin Naiker has built an extraordinary decade-plus career at the forefront of financial crime prevention and regulatory compliance across Australasia.

Today, Alvin serves as the Group Head of Compliance at Toll Group. An ACAMS-certified compliance leader, he specialises in high-stakes regulatory frameworks—including International Sanctions, Anti-Money Laundering & Counter-Terrorism Financing, Foreign Trade Controls, Anti-Bribery & Corruption, and Anti-Modern Slavery.

Throughout his career, Alvin has led large-scale remediation and transformation programs across government agencies, top-tier financial institutions, and global corporations. Reflecting on the foundations of his success, Alvin credits much of his resilience and drive to the early encouragement he received during his time at school.

“Mr Simpson believed in me even when I doubted myself. He always challenged me to push beyond my limits and not to be held back by fear or others’ opinions. His support and encouragement gave me the confidence to grow, and his influence still inspires me.”

“Financial crime and compliance wasn’t something I knew I wanted to pursue at school or university. In fact, I didn’t even know this career existed! What I did know was that I was ambitious and determined to work in an environment where I could keep learning and growing.

I started working part-time in financial services while studying at university, which introduced me to the industry and the range of corporate roles available. I’ve always liked asking questions, examining evidence and solving complex problems. As I discovered more about financial crime investigations, I realised it brought those interests together. I moved into a fraud investigations role and continued building my career from there.

For students interested in this field, law, commerce, accounting, criminology and data analytics can all provide useful foundations. There are now more specialised study options available than when I started, with universities and education providers across New Zealand and Australia offering specialised degrees and qualifications in financial crime investigation and compliance. Gaining work experience alongside your studies can also help you discover your interests and strengths.

My biggest advice is to stay curious, keep an open mind and be willing to step outside your comfort zone. You don’t need your whole career mapped out before you begin. Sometimes, the first step simply helps you discover an opportunity you never knew existed.”

Alvin remains closely connected to his roots, returning to Waitākere College as a Guest Speaker at the 2024 Senior Prizegiving. The college is proud to feature his name on the Outstanding Achievement Honours Board on display in the Jackson Auditorium. His journey demonstrates how the values nurtured at school - courage, curiosity, and overcoming self-doubt, can lay the groundwork for high-impact leadership on the world stage.
